Ithaca sells 'defense' model that has a 18 1/2 inch interchangeable barrel. Anyone know if that short barrel will fit my old gun? I'm not sure that a 7 1/2inch shorter barrel at $250 would make the gun that much more of a home defense gun since the stock on the two guns is the same size. I guess another option would be to try and find an old barrel and cut it down. |

Retired Moderator & Gunsmith Location: CB, IA | stonebuster, The movies would have you believe a short barreled shotgun has a huge pattern . making it hard to miss the target. In reality, if you pattern your short barreled shotgun with no choke, you will find at 'home defense' distances of 25 feet, the pattern is only about 6' in diameter . very little difference than from a longer barrel. Tighter chokes do restrict the size of the pattern but again, at home defense distances, there isn't much difference. A shorter barrel does make the gun less wieldy to handle but that's about the only advantage for home defense. |

Location: OH - Ohio | I had a 1971 feather weight that came with two barrels but never tried any other barrels on it. I am not a expert but I beleave if your Model 37 has a serial number below 855,000 or 1963 the barrels are fixed and non-interchangeable. Above 855,000 serial number or 1963 they do have interchangeable barrels but they can require some fitting by a gunsmith. I think some of the Deerslayers models do not have interchangeable barrels. Best is to check with the factory to make sure. |

Location: Virginia | The myths concerning shotgun patterns are astounding. In the first few feet from the muzzle the shot column will be very compact and behave similar to a slug. After a couple of yards the shot pattern starts to open up at about 1' per yard, give or take a little depending on choke, pellet size, velocity and condition of the pellets. Obviously at some point the pattern becomes too large to be effective, the pellets lose too much energy to be effective and eventually the pellets will fall to the ground. Smaller pellets lose energy quicker than larger/heavier pellets. A shorter barrel doesn't change the pattern much at short ranges. The myth that short barrels produce enormous patterns at incredibly short ranges is false. The lack of a choke or the use of an improved cylinder will open the pattern up quicker than a full choke but the difference at short ranges isn't as dramatic as some people think. An extremely short barrel with no choke will result in less velocity and a slightly larger pattern at close ranges but not the dramatic, Cover the wall from 8' feet away' stories you hear. |

The barrels are not fixed but they are not designed to be interchangeable. The “head space” may not be consistent. So check with a professional gunsmith before casually switching barrels. Cutting a classic Ithaca M37 or Winchester M12 barrel down is sacrilegious. If it you want a home defense shotgun get a Remington 870 and a factory 18” barrel. Cheap used. You do not need 3” chambers for home defense. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |
